#51 What is your first memory of worshipping in our Church? Suzie Barna Veres remembers as a child thinking this church was the biggest church built, with the high ceiling with stars and great Icons and paintings. What will the memories be in the next 100 years. #50 Do you remember the yearly picnics at Kasmer's Farm? We would hold Divine Liturgy standing in the grass, the choir would sing and it was such a great feeling being right there with God's creation and having communion right there. Of course great food followed. #49 Do you remember learning the folk dances in 1950's with Mr. Blaskevitch as the DJ and Peter Patrick who would take the lead? #48 Suzie Barna Veres remembers the choir practices help at Mary Harwin's home which was so big and very elegant. Practic lead by her mom was in the living room, Suzie, age 6 or 7 drew and colored in the kitchen with deserts in the lovely dining room. #47 Did you know that one of the Church's plaschanitsa was made by nuns in Jerusalem in the 1950s. The project took four years to complete and the gold threads came from France. #46 How important is our Religion to our members? How many have you attended? #39 Sam Sokoluk has been playing for our festival for more than 30 years, and in 1978 he received his stage name "Cossack Sam". #38 Our famous Kugel was first made in 1978 by Alice DiAntonio for our Russian Festival and has been made ever since by her family. #37 Just ask anyone for a favorite memory. We did! Matushka Pat stated that when they moved to St. Michael’s, Father had his girls wearing head covering -- a "Platok". On the fourth Sunday the oldest said, "No, we want to be like all the other girls." Check it out. #31 There has been over 10 sets of twins born in our recent history. #30 The very important historical archive collection of the parish has so far remained the only one in the arear. #29 The Youth Club in the 1980-90's raised more than $15,000 which helped in the renovation of the Hall and the repainting of the Royal Doors. #28 In 1954 Faith of Our Fathers was published and was an excellent reference book used by our Sunday School? #27 In the 1950's St. Michael's owned property on Rising Sun Avenue in Olney which served as a Chapel and Rectory for a 2nd Priest?). #26 The lights and light covers under the balcony were made by Andrew Lahovan (grandfather of Joel Patrick). #25 The Youth Club in the 1980's held the first spaghetti luncheons and Palm Sunday dinners to raise money to renovate the church hall? #24 The Sunday School building was two separate residences; rectory for our priest, and home for our choir director. #23 The small chandeliers in the church were donated by the Russian Brotherhood after WWII. #22 In 1956 Bud Smarkola was National Chairman of the National "R" Club Convention which was held at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel in Philadelphia. #21 The lace altar cloths/covers for our church furniture were designed and made by Eva Greenjack. #20 In the 1940¹s Alex Kobasa was President of St. Michael¹s Junior R Club which worked on the Sunday School Building. #19 On September 1, 1956, our parish hosted the 30th Annual F.R.O.C. Convention with over 1,000 worshippers attending the Pontifical Divine Liturgy. #18 Did you know that on January 7, 1961, our entire Divine Liturgy was televised live on a local Philadelphia network. #17 Did you know that this parish took an active part in the attempt to form an independent Carpatho-Russia in 1921? #16 Did you know that Saint Michael has attracted members and visitors from many ethnic and religious backgrounds, while cherishing our ancestral legacy? #15 Did You that Stephen Blaskevitch, Jr. was the first Junior Choir member to read the Epistle? #14 Did You that Bishop Makary loved this parish because so many of the children of immigrants had achieved so much? He always kept informed their progress? #13 Did You know that people from this parish actually went to jail in order to be able to have their Orthodox Church? #12 Did You know that men and women were seated separately in the Nave of the Church? Shast’s Sunday School Class of so many little ones? #1 - On December 25, 1909, a day the Parishioners would be off from work, Archpriest John Kruchmalny celebrated the first Divine Liturgy for our parish at 9th and Spring Garden? |
